Job Description

The Sign Language Interpreter will be responsible for interpreting spoken language into Kenyan sign language and vice versa to individuals who are Deaf and or Hard of hearing. The interpreter must have excellent communication skills, fluency in Kenyan sign language, and the ability to accurately and efficiently convey the meaning and intent of spoken language.

Position Overview

The Sign Language Interpreter will be responsible for interpreting spoken language into Kenyan sign language and vice versa to individuals who are Deaf and or Hard of hearing. The interpreter must have excellent communication skills, fluency in Kenyan sign language, and the ability to accurately and efficiently convey the meaning and intent of spoken language.

Overall responsibilities include:

  • Interpret spoken language into KSL and vice versa accurately and efficiently without adding, omitting, or changing the meaning.
  • Provide a comprehensive range of interpreting and transliterating services for employees who are deaf or hard of hearing (HoH).
  • Provide Interpretation in various settings such as meetings, conferences, training, and events.
  • Ensure confidentiality and privacy of all interpreted communications.
  • Responsible for interpreting across various communication modes during work-related assignments.
  • Coordinate all incoming requests for staff interpreting services through emails and phone calls.
  • Utilize the MS Outlook calendar to schedule time blocks for interpreting services, adhering to organizational requirements and team availability.
  • Work collaboratively with other interpreters, clients, colleagues to provide the best services.
  • Provide administrative support to the event team to facilitate the planning and execution of the Inclusive Africa Conference.
  • Ensure effective communication during public meetings and social gatherings.
  • Stay current on language and interpreting skills and techniques through continuing education and training programs.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills:

  • Experience: A minimum of 1 year of experience in SLI.
  • Education: A minimum of a Diploma in Communication/Marketing or any other related field and graduation from an Interpreter Training Program (ITP).
  • Certification: Certified in National sign language interpreter body.
  • Knowledge: A broad knowledge of technical and human resource vocabulary to facilitate communication in the workplace. They must also have an exceptional understanding of English Sign Language and Deaf culture.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills: Have exceptional abilities to communicate and build relationships with both the deaf and hearing audience.
  • Flexibility: Can work within a changing schedule and ability to travel if need be.
  • Teamwork: Interpreter who can work as part of a team.
  • Strong listening, research, memory, and sign language skills.
  • Professionalism and Ethics Skills: Adhere to the code of ethics, maintaining confidentiality and impartiality while providing services.
  • Possess exceptional English and sign language skills to excel as an interpreter.
