Julius Mbura is a blind lawyer who is passionate about advocating for disability rights in order to provide Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) with educational opportunities and career advancement that they are legally entitled to but are currently not receiving. He is now the new Advocacy Officer at inABLE.org, a nonprofit based in Kenya and the United States that uses computer-assisted technology to empower blind and visually impaired students in Africa.

He is in charge of advocacy and empowerment at inABLE’s six partner schools for the blind in Kenya. His leadership and transitional skills will benefit blind and visually impaired youth who, like him, will gain computer skills competence and confidence through the inABLE Computer-Lab-for-the-Blind Program at Thika High School for the Blind.

Julius envisions a meaningful career that eventually bridges the gaps that exclude or limit PWDs’ advancement as a result of the wide disparity between theoretical legal frameworks on human rights and reality in Kenya and the African region today.

Julius demonstrates his love and knowledge of cars through touch and feel on his YouTube channel Julio Supercharge, which has approximately 3,500 subscribers. He works hard to change people’s perceptions of disabilities and, in his spare time, goes out of his way to showcase his various talents and hobbies.

Career highlights…

Julius graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) (2018). He attended Thika Primary School and Thika High School for the Blind. His life mission is to promote PWDs’ full and effective participation in society on an equal footing with others.

He worked as a Trainee Advocate at Letangule and Co. Advocates before joining inABLE (2020). He also worked as a Computer Instructor (2017) at the Kenya Society for the Blind, where he taught blind and visually impaired students basic computer skills. He also worked as a Rehabilitating Officer at KSB (2018), assisting students with transitional skills, and as a Trainee Advocate at the Kikuyu Law Courts (2016).

Julius is also a motivational speaker who mentors young boys and girls at various institutions for the blind and visually impaired. He is a Spoken Word Performer, a Dancer, a Model, and an avid Hiker. He also volunteers at New Age for the Visually Impaired, a community-based organization where he oversees the design and implementation of public awareness campaigns about visual impairment.
