Douglas Omweba, a computer instructor with inABLE, had a discussion about the looming primary exit examinations with a few Class 8 candidats from St. Lucy School for the Blind in Meru County, Kenya. He found out that they were ecstatic about the exam because they were confident in their ability to score high grades enough to open doors to new opportunities.

Our inABLE Advocacy Officer Julius Mbura, who was born with sight but lost it twice as a child and is now completely blind, encouraged the students to think outside the box. “With assistive technology, you can be anything you want to be like everyone else. I challenge you to go above and beyond what others expect of you and pursue the careers of your dreams,” he advised the candidates who shared their career aspirations.

For example, Patrick Mukathe wants to be a consultant surgeon, Julian Mumbi wants to be a doctor, and Hillary Macharia wants to be a pilot. The chart below depicts the diverse and ambitious career goals of the incoming Class Eight students at St. Lucy School for the Blind:

This multicolor pie chart depicts the career aspirations of the Class 8 students, including 24% Doctors, 19% Lecturers, 14% Lawyers, 5% Comedian, Farmer, Nurse, Banker, Journalist, Engineer, 4% Politiician
