Update- Disability Mainstreaming Status Report
inableAdmin
inABLE was invited to attend the launch of the first Kenyan Disability Mainstreaming status report (2021-2022) organized by the National Council for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD). NCPWD, as part of its mandate, evaluates Disability Mainstreaming across government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) in line with the performance contract guidelines established by the public service performance management and monitoring unit.
This was the first of its kind and an indication that Kenya has come a long way in embracing Disability and ensuring that Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) are not left behind in economic, social, and governance development.
The Chief Guest was Hon. Florence Bore, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection. In her wonderful speech, she acknowledged the existence of the ICT Accessibility Standard for products and services KS 2952, which inABLE developed in partnership with the Kenyan government. She went on to urge the hastening of the Disability Policy, which has been in creation for a long period and encouraged the disability mainstreaming to go beyond the performance contracting phase and outlined that accessibility should be prioritized at Airports and other public transportation terminals.
The report detailed the performance of over 300 MDAs in promoting disability mainstreaming in their institutions, highlighted challenges faced in releasing a disability-inclusive public service, and gave recommendations on the future of disability mainstreaming.
This launch served as a call to action for all stakeholders to revamp their efforts to establish a country where Persons with Disabilities are not left behind in the Nation’s development Agenda.
