inABLE and Technoprise Global, in partnership with Caribou Digital and Mastercard Foundation, have launched a first-of-a-kind exploratory research study exploring the impact of digital platforms on the livelihoods of youth with disabilities. This research, including a quantitative survey of 148 participants, in-depth interviews and focus groups with 86 participants, and digital accessibility assessments of 3 key e-commerce platforms, offers a powerful insight into the livelihoods of youth with disabilities and how they use digital platforms to overcome their challenges.

Similarly, Linet Kulola, who has a hearing disability, has leveraged digital platforms to build a successful makeup artist and baker career. Linet found in the digital world an opportunity to communicate effectively with clients and share her talents with a broader audience. She uses platforms like #TikTok and #Instagram to showcase her work and connect with others who share her experiences.

Digital platforms have facilitated Linet’s professional growth and personal development. They have empowered her to become financially independent, pursue her passions, and connect with a community that understands and supports her journey. You can hear Linet’s inspiring story here.

While Adika and Linet’s stories underscore the transformative power of digital platforms, they also shed light on some of the challenges people with disabilities face in this sphere. The platforms are not without their obstacles, and both Adika and Linet have had to navigate issues related to accessibility, communication, and usability. Despite the digital environment offering them an avenue to showcase their skills and talents, there is a need for more intuitive design and increased inclusivity to ensure these platforms can truly cater to all users.

These stories highlight the necessity and importance of understanding the impact of digital platforms on the livelihoods of youth with disabilities. Through this research, we aim to shed light on the transformative power of technology while encouraging the development of more inclusive digital platforms. The research points to design challenges that people with disabilities encounter on digital platforms as they access and use them.
