Magdalene Chesoli lives with a physical disability; she uses a prosthesis for mobility on her left limb. Magdalene was born with a missing limb and growing up, she grappled with self-esteem and insecurity issues, often hiding her prosthesis to avoid questions and judgments from others. However, with unwavering support from her family and friends, she has overcome these struggles and embraced her unique journey.

Magdalene’s story is one of significant milestones and personal growth. She has bravely shared her journey on various platforms, including Hot 96 with Jeff Koinange, the Daily Nation newspaper, NTV, Radio Maisha, and K24. These appearances have allowed her to raise awareness and inspire others facing similar challenges.

“I am most proud of my accomplishments; my self-growth, self-acceptance, and the confidence that I now possess,” Magdalene shares. “Having a podcast that enables me to share stories of other amputees is quite encouraging. Professionally, I get to do what I am passionate about in the field of prosthetics.”

Magdalene currently serves as the Community Manager at Circleg, and her primary focus is cultivating a supportive network for individuals navigating the journey of amputation. Her daily routines are a testament to her resilience and zest for life. She finds joy in dancing, fashion, and maintaining a positive outlook. “I’m all about good vibes and inshallah,” she says, reflecting her optimistic and determined spirit.

One of the most significant challenges Magdalene has overcome is stigmatization and discrimination. She acknowledges that while she cannot change people’s perceptions, she can shape her own identity and aspirations. This mindset has propelled her to notable successes, including her involvement in the “Express Your Beauty” campaign. This initiative demonstrated that amputees are not limited to walking; they can dance and express themselves fully.

Magdalene’s impact extends beyond campaigns. During a podcast session, she interviewed a parent of an amputee child, creating a profound connection with the young girl who was thrilled to see someone like her. This friendship highlights the importance of representation and community for individuals with disabilities.

Disability Pride Month holds special significance for Magdalene. “Disability Pride Month means celebrating the challenges and achievements made in the disability community,” she explains. The theme “I want a life like yours” resonates deeply with her, as she has faced discrimination in both the workplace and at home. She emphasizes the need for inclusive work environments that provide equal opportunities for people with disabilities.

Magdalene advocates for making assistive devices more accessible and affordable for all individuals with disabilities. “This will enhance their way of life and make them independent,” she asserts. Her vision for the future includes a community of empowered amputees who live unapologetically and are well-informed about the amputation journey and prosthetics.

“With healing and assistive devices, individuals with limb loss or difference can live normal lives again,” Magdalene states. “Support them and cheer them on to help them become productive individuals in society.”

Looking ahead, Magdalene aspires to share her story and experiences as a speaker in high schools, special schools, and universities. She also aims to grow in her field of public relations, continuing to advocate for the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities.

Magdalene’s journey is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit. Her story of overcoming stigma, embracing self-acceptance, and advocating for inclusivity inspires us all to support and empower those with disabilities, helping them achieve their fullest potential.
