Phelix Owiny’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and advocacy. Diagnosed with vitiligo in 2008, he has transformed his personal experience into a powerful platform to raise awareness about the condition through his art—particularly photography. In this blog, Phelix shares his journey, the challenges he has faced, and the triumphs that have defined his life, offering inspiration to others navigating similar paths.

“I developed vitiligo in 2008,” Phelix begins, reflecting on the moment that changed his life. From the onset, Phelix faced judgment and ostracism from his peers and community. “There was no escape,” he recalls. “I had to look in the mirror and see someone I didn’t recognize, someone who didn’t feel like they belonged in their own skin.”

Over the years, Phelix has risen above these adversities. Though vitiligo wasn’t something he intended to define him, he has embraced the beauty and strength in what others may view as a flaw. His personal growth has transformed how he views himself.

“Beauty has no skin tone,” Phelix affirms. “We should embrace our skin as it is.” He continues to educate others, challenging the stigmas surrounding vitiligo. Phelix recounts how people sometimes assume he has a terminal illness and that he often encounters stares and probing questions. Rather than letting frustration take over, he uses these moments to inform and educate others about vitiligo.

Photography: A Canvas for Advocacy

Phelix’s passion for photography was born out of a desire to express himself and create greater awareness about vitiligo. He discovered that photography was the perfect medium for his message. As both an artist and advocate, Phelix uses his camera lens to challenge societal beauty standards.

“I want to encourage everyone to see the beauty within themselves,” he says. Through various photography projects, including collaborations with Spartan Photography, Phelix captures the diversity of the human form and promotes inclusivity.

“Vitiligo is art,” he continues. “My body is a canvas, and I choose to be a subject of art rather than hide.” For Phelix, photography is more than a form of expression—it’s a tool to redefine beauty and spark conversations around the condition that shaped his life.

Living with vitiligo hasn’t been without challenges, particularly in Phelix’s career. Despite his skills and talents, he often finds that people view him differently. He feels the need to prove himself before being given an opportunity. Yet, he refuses to let these perceptions define him.

Phelix is also part of Royal Patches, a Kenyan support group that provides a safe space for individuals with vitiligo to share their experiences. “This group unites those of us with vitiligo, allowing us to share our challenges and successes. Our differences are what bring us together.”

Through his advocacy work, Phelix emphasizes the need for increased awareness and education about vitiligo. He believes that grassroots advocacy and policy efforts are crucial to reducing the stigma surrounding the condition.

A Vision for the Future

Phelix’s dreams extend far beyond his current work. “I aspire to be internationally recognized,” he shares. He is collaborating with global firms to expand his reach and is planning a runway show featuring individuals with disabilities.

When asked what he hopes to be remembered for, Phelix’s answer is clear: he wants to be known as a champion for those living with vitiligo, and he hopes his efforts leave a lasting impact. To those struggling with visible differences, Phelix offers this advice: “You are not alone. You are beautiful. Your success does not depend on others’ validation.”

As Phelix continues his journey as both an artist and advocate, he remains committed to creating awareness and breaking down barriers. His story is a testament to the power of self-acceptance and the importance of raising awareness.

Phelix’s journey reminds us that beauty exists in diversity and that every individual, regardless of their challenges, holds immense value. His message to the world is simple: “Believe in yourself, embrace your uniqueness, and see the beauty in the patchwork of life.”
