Bringing together innovators and key stakeholders in the disability space is crucial to eliminating barriers that limit the inclusion of persons with disabilities in broader society. Such gatherings offer innovators the chance to present their ideas and solutions to policymakers, developers, and investors across various sectors.
Anthony Ndirangu, inABLE’s Our Program Manager, had the privilege of attending the Zero Project Bangalore Technology Forum: Food for Thought 2024, organized by Zero Project, EnAble India, and Youth 4 Jobs Foundation in Bangalore, India. He shares his thoughts and lessons picked with us.
“This significant event showcased groundbreaking assistive technology solutions from innovators across India and other parts of Asia. It also brought together key stakeholders committed to building international partnerships to support innovation and impact investment in the disability space.
The range of innovations and solutions presented was truly inspiring, covering sectors such as education, sports, art, technology, and communication. What stood out most was that many of these innovations were designed and developed by people with disabilities themselves.
During the event, individuals with disabilities shared their personal experiences, emphasizing the need for greater intervention in areas like sports, education, and recreation. Many confirmed that accessible recreational facilities are limited, and reasonable accommodations are often lacking. There is also a significant gap in STEM and sporting activities for persons with disabilities.
One notable innovator, Rigzin Tamchos, a para-archer, and winner of the Discovery Awards 2023, demonstrated a simple yet impactful innovation in the world of sports. As a wheelchair user, He Modified his wheelchair for Archery-para-archer. You can watch it here: Rigzin Tamchos’s Innovation.

Another standout innovation was the Disabilities Innovative Solutions Hub (DISH), an inclusive platform dedicated to providing assistive solutions for all. Learn more about DISH here: DISH – EnAble Solutions.
Grassroots innovations like these can be game-changers in the assistive technology space. With solid research, innovators can develop tailored solutions that address local challenges using available resources. Through research, we can identify missing assistive technologies (ATs) for different types of disabilities, as well as discover potential innovators who can drive change in this space. However, it’s also clear that many AT innovations are not reaching the intended target groups.
Scaling up grassroots AT innovations is essential. Stakeholders, investors, and people of goodwill need to engage in conversations about scaling these solutions. One of the panelists highlighted that “disability is everywhere, and solutions can come from everywhere.” Collaboration is critical, as everyone has experiences that can contribute to positive change.
Ultimately, every individual should have access to the tools and resources they need to lead their best lives, regardless of their abilities or disabilities. Supporting and encouraging innovations that enhance the lives of persons with disabilities is a key step toward building a more inclusive future.”
