inABLE Brings Digital Learning Opportunities to Isinya

inABLE has opened the Isinya Digital Hub, giving learners from nearby schools the chance to gain digital skills through a structured holiday bootcamp. The hub, located in Kajiado County, is the second of its kind established by inABLE following Kang’aru Digital Hub in Kiambu County. Both hubs are part of inABLE’s broader mission to expand digital access and create inclusive opportunities for students across Kenya.

Since opening, the Isinya hub has received strong support from the community. County and sub-county education directors, local chiefs, clergy, and school leaders have encouraged families to participate. This support has created a sense of ownership that has helped the program start on a strong foundation. 

The holiday bootcamp was created with three main goals: to introduce learners in grades 4 to Form 3 to computers and digital tools, to provide hands-on training in computer basics and applications, and to inspire curiosity that will prepare them for more advanced areas such as coding, design, and artificial intelligence. 

Interest in the program has been very high. A total of 527 learners registered, including 205 from primary, 203 from junior secondary, and 112 from senior secondary schools. The group included 249 girls and 277 boys. To accommodate this number, the hub scheduled sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. With two computer labs equipped with 40 Chromebooks each, 80 students could train every hour.

Learners have responded with great enthusiasm. According to the instructional team, many students ask to extend their time in the labs, and attendance has remained consistent throughout the program. “Learners are eager to attend, and many request extra time to continue their projects. They are discovering that computers are not only for learning but also for creativity and problem-solving,” says Stephen Ochieng Odindo, Lead ICT Instructor at the hub. 

The progress of individual students shows how powerful digital access can be. One story is that of Esther, a Grade 7 learner who had never touched a computer before the bootcamp. She began nervously but, within three weeks, was confidently typing sentences and presenting her work to her classmates. “Her journey from beginner to confident user in such a short time shows what access and guidance can achieve,” Stephen explains.

The program has also faced challenges, including power outages, internet interruptions, and scheduling constraints. The inABLE team responded by preparing offline materials, adjusting lesson plans, and planning to extend sessions to 90 minutes in future bootcamps. Younger learners who needed literacy support were guided within the digital lessons, allowing them to strengthen both their spelling and computer skills. “We see every challenge as an opportunity to improve how we deliver digital learning,” Stephen added. 

The Isinya Digital Hub is more than a space for computer training. It is a place where students are building confidence, discovering new skills, and preparing for future opportunities. As the second hub after Kang’aru, it reflects inABLE’s commitment to providing access to technology in underserved regions. The vision is that the Isinya Hub will not only support learners today but also shape a generation of young people in Kajiado County with the digital literacy and confidence to succeed in the future.
