inABLE and Nation Media Foundation partner to revolutionize accessibility for individuals with disabilities

Last November, inABLE and Nation Media Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to revolutionize accessibility for individuals with disabilities. This partnership marks a pivotal moment, propelling the Nation Media Foundation towards becoming an inclusive institution granting unlimited access to information for all.   

The signing ceremony between the two entities took place at the Nation Media Center. The inABLE team was led by Catherine Wamwangi – Country HR Representative, and in the presence of George Siso – Business Development Manager, Diana Michieka – Events & Partnerships Officer and Julius Mbura – Advocacy Officer.

Catherine Wamwangi gave an overview of inABLE’s inspiring 15-year journey, highlighting remarkable initiatives like the disability etiquette workshop and the upcoming annual Inclusive Africa Conference scheduled from May 14th to 16th 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya. She mentioned the promising prospects for collaboration between inABLE and Nation Media Foundation in advancing digital accessibility and assistive technology across Africa.

Julius Mbura, inABLE’s Advocacy Officer, shared his lived experience as a blind individual, shedding light on the challenges faced in tertiary education while accessing information. He told of his encounter with a screen reader in Thika High School for the blind, an inABLE partner school, that equipped him with the digital prowess to pursue Law at The University of Nairobi. Julius’ inspiring journey from litigation to advocacy reflects the unlimited potential of individuals with disabilities when provided with accessible learning materials. 

Mr. Stephen Gitagama, CEO of Nation Media Group, expressed his excitement for the partnership with inABLE. He emphasized Nation Media Foundation’s commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities by ensuring access to learning materials. The foundation aims to harness inABLE’s expertise in inclusive learning to set up their Ngong’ Library Project, following the success of inABLE’s Kanga’ru Digital Hub in Kairi Village, Thika.

With the signing of the MOU, inABLE is the accessibility partner for Nation Media Foundation’s multifaceted pillars, including Education and Literacy, Health, Natural Resource Management, Community Development through Entrepreneurship, Media Development and Humanitarian Relief. 

This strategic alliance between inABLE and Nation Media Foundation embodies a shared vision of inclusivity, poised to empower and transform lives. The promise of an inclusive future shines brighter through this collaborative effort.
