Kenya Sign Language (KSL) is vital, but it has limitations, especially for specialised subjects like Mathematics and Science. For deaf and hard-of-hearing students, this can turn complex lessons into barriers to understanding, while teachers may struggle to convey technical concepts clearly.
Digital accessibility offers another pathway to learning. inABLE is addressing this gap through the AI Live Caption Project at Kambui School for the Deaf, piloting real-time captioning for Grades 5–8.
The technology instantly converts spoken classroom instruction into on-screen text, giving students immediate access to what is being taught, complementing Kenyan Sign Language.
The impact goes beyond following a lesson. Continuous exposure to written language strengthens reading, writing and independent learning, while giving teachers a powerful tool to communicate complex concepts more clearly.

Where We Work
Kambui School for the Deaf
Kambui School for the Deaf is a boarding school for boys and girls in Githunguri, Kiambu County. Established in 1965 through an initiative of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa Women’s Guild, the school provides early childhood, primary, junior school, and vocational education for learners who are deaf or hard of hearing. It supports learners through classroom instruction, practical skills development, and co-curricular activities that encourage learning and participation. Since May 2025, inABLE has implemented an AI Live Captioning pilot at Kambui School for the Deaf to make spoken classroom instruction more accessible. The technology converts teachers’ speech into real-time text displayed on classroom screens, helping learners follow explanations alongside sign language, lip-reading, written notes, and teacher support. This provides another pathway for learners to understand new words and concepts, participate more independently in lessons, and strengthen their reading and writing skills. The pilot has reached 136 beneficiaries, including 120 students and 16 teachers.
