Assistive Technology Labs
Since the 1950s, braille has been the primary educational tool in Kenya's schools for the blind, essential for reading and writing, yet bulky and up to ten times more expensive than the same book in print. Too often, students graduated with strong braille skills only to enter a world that largely doesn't use braille, disconnected from the workplaces and technology around them.
About The Program
inABLE was founded in 2009 to bridge this gap. We partner with schools for the blind across Kenya to establish Assistive Technology Labs equipped with computers, assistive software, and infrastructure, paired with hands-on digital skills training for students and teachers who are blind or have low vision. This gives them the confidence to access technology independently.
To date, inABLE has established Assistive Technology Labs in schools for the blind across Kenya, enrolling more than 18,500+ students and delivering over 52,000 hours of digital skills training, equipping thousands with the skills to learn, work, and connect with the world.
From Computer Labs to Digital Classrooms
Through our partnership with Google, we're bringing Chromebooks into classrooms for the blind to support learning, communication, and independence. To date, 648 Chromebooks have been deployed in schools for the blind across Kenya.
Assistive Technology for University Students (ATUS)
Braille carries students through school, but university brings a new barrier: professors and institutions cannot read it, putting independent research, writing, and advocacy out of reach and delaying exam results.
Our ATUS program closes this gap by equipping visually impaired law students at the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta University with MacBooks, assistive software, and mentorship, enabling them to read, write, research, and even run small businesses, just like their sighted peers.
